You'll Remember

Whether you make it or not, you’ll always remember her. She wasn’t your first kiss, but her kiss was the first that set your heart on fire. You won’t forget the days you spent gazing up into the universe, and every time the sky is painted blue and white and orange and pink, you’ll remember the way she sang her favorite songs in your ear. She was there when you passed your final chemistry exam in high school with a dorky high-five and a piece of her chocolate bar that she always carried around on test days.
When someone asks you if youve ever broken a bone, youll say your wrist, hand, and twice your nose. You broke your wrist falling off a bike? Or was it a tree? You probably wont remember. But you broke your hand punching the walls when your friends decided that she wasn’t good for you. You’ll remember the weeks she held your left hand, and the way she’d shake her head and whisper “I was not worth this.”Youll remember how she visited you at work, and all shed order was vanilla ice cream, but she’d stay for hours.
You’ll remember all her pets’ names because they were all named after her favorite foods. You’ll remember her old grey car with the squeaky brakes and all the nights she took the long the way home and her obsession with the moon. You’ll remember the way she likes her coffee. The way she rolls her eyes when she’s angry. The click of her heels on the tiles. How her eyes shut when she was laughing too hard. The way she smiled against your lips when you told her you love her.
She’s a part of you, and you won’t ever forget her.
